Thirty years ago Health Holidays began offering health breaks in the Algarve region of Portugal. Since then, thousands of guests have followed a detox and sports programme supervised by professional English-speaking staff. You can stay in the outstanding four-star hotel Vale d’El Rei in Carvoeiro at a very competitive price, which includes a return flight with Transavia.
The Algarve is the most southerly region of Portugal. It lies on the Atlantic Ocean and covers the entire width of South Portugal. The region has a subtropical climate and enjoys more than 3000 hours of sun a year on average. The name Algarve is derived from the Arabic term El Gharb, which means The West. It was occupied by the Moors for 600 years. Very little remains from that period, with the exception of some town walls and castle walls in Silves and Tavira, although some bridges and ruins from the Roman era can still be found.
The Algarve is famous around the world for its beautiful, long, sandy beaches and excellent golf courses. With 35 courses and a very pleasant climate, this region is a paradise for golfers. Along the coast you will also find innumerable small beaches concealed in calm, secluded bays and surrounded by unique caves, caverns and rock formations.
Besides the many beaches, the region has a varied landscape. Farther inland the land is hilly and sparsely populated, the highest peak being Foia (902 m) near Monchique. Manual labour is still the primary source of income here. Eucalyptus, pine and lavender grow abundantly all year round, whereas in the months of January and February the almond trees cover the hills with a sheet of white.
The four-star hotel Vale d’El Rei is situated in a peaceful location in magnificent natural surroundings.
Towns in the vicinity of Vale d’El Rei include Carvoeiro, Lagoa and Porches. The picturesque fishing village of Carvoeiro nestles between the rocks and has no high-rise buildings to mar its appearance. The remains of the fortress walls can be found at the top of the cliff. This spot affords fabulous views over the ocean and the cliffs of Cabo (Cape) Carvoeiro. About 500 metres from there are the rock formations of Algar Seco, shaped by the sea and the wind. A flight of 134 steps takes you to various caves and caverns.
The sandy beaches of Benagil, Marinha and Armação de Pera are perfect for long walks, allowing you to enjoy the abundant sunshine of the Algarve. If you want to take a special walk, we definitely recommend the Seven Hanging Valleys walk.
The Algarve also has plenty of options for surfers and divers, or you could go on one of the many boat trips, which offer dolphin spotting, fishing, bird-watching or a tour of the caves.
If you fancy a cultural excursion during your welfare holiday,
then Silves is highly recommended.
Health Holidays offers you an extensive programme of activities at this location, allowing you to turn your health trip into a fine holiday. For this we have a bus, which is used in the mornings to take our guests to the beautiful location where the walking workout takes place (+/- 15 min.).
